Typical Itinerary

dugout in river.jpg (17331 bytes)Day 1 (Tue) - Transfer to airport. Fly to Lago Agrio. Drive to El Puente (entrance to the Cuyabeno Reserve). Box lunch on the way. Canoe ride down the Cuyabeno River admiring the wide variety of Flora and Fauna. Dinner and overnight in Tapir Lodge.

Day 2 (Wed) - After breakfast, explore the primary forest, learn about the endemic flora and fauna of the region. Your first excursion will be a 3 hour walk in the primary forest including the nearby lake of Laguna Grande where you will see a large variety of ancient trees, long lianas, giant palms, bromeliads, orchids, monkeys bigtree.jpg (4419 bytes)and birds (including woodpeckers, tanagers, macaws, and toucans). Lunch at the lodge. Afternoon piranha fishing and refreshing dip in the Cuyabeno Lagoon. Dinner and overnight in Tapir Lodge.

Day 3 (Thu) - After breakfast, hike through the jungle with naturalist guide who will discuss the use of medicinal plants. You may see diurnal mammals, reptiles and birds. Lunch in the lodge. Afternoon canoe ride to the Canangueno Lake. Good chances to admire Amazon sunset.jpg (10052 bytes)fresh-water dolphins, arapaimas, prehistoric hoatsins and a fantastic sunset. Dinner and overnight in Tapir Lodge.

Day 4 (Fri) - Early breakfast and bird watching. Visit the small settlement of Puerto Bolivar (Siona Indians). Lunch. Afternoon bird and butterfly watching and take a canoe to Grande Lake for an extraordinary sunset. After dark look for caimans while immersed in the nocturnal wildlife along the Cuyabeno River.

Waterfall in Amazonia.jpg (14517 bytes)Day 5 (Sat) Early breakfast. Head back upriver with some bird watching and a chance to enjoy the surrounding environment. Arrive in El Puente and bus ride to airport. Flight back to Quito. Transfer to hotel.

Day 6 (Sun) Transfer to airport and return to Washington D.C.
