The tortoise population of the Aldabra Atoll is the only surviving group existing in the Seychelles, an archipelago of islands in the Indian Ocean. Nearby islands were once home to herds of tortoises that were wiped out by man around 1800. Aldabra is surrounded by jagged limestone and small beaches. The island is only 18 miles long and 5 miles wide. An estimated 100,000 tortoises, the largest population in the world, survive on this small land area that is largely inaccessible to man.
