Alligators

Alligators

Our adult American alligators include Rocky, an 11-foot 600-pound male and Adrian a 9-foot female. During spring months, visitors are sometimes treated to the male’s low-frequency bellow—the vibrations from his roars cause the water surrounding him to “dance.”

White Alligator

In the same building, we have a rare white alligator. This albino is a female that came to us from Dallas Zoo. The first baby albino alligator was discovered in Louisiana in the 1960s, and since then several more of them have been found and distributed to zoos. These alligators probably would not survive to adult size in the wild due to being conspicuous to predators and sensitive to sunburn.

There are two kinds of white alligators: leucistic and albino. Ours is albino. That means she lacks the pigment melanin, making her appear white.
